Irontown Celebrates 30 Years The Pioneer Days and Heikki Lunta celebrations are popular events, celebrations that Negaunee residents and alumni look forward to each year, and 2009 is a special year for the organization that puts on these events. The Negaunee Irontown Association is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a special membership to the organization. This year, membership cost is $30, but you also get a whole lot for that minimal amount. “For the size of Negaunee, we need an increased membership base to meet the rising costs associated with these events, particularly the fireworks displays over Teal Lake, we have an aggressive Board that will continue to seek new members, but we encourage residents of Negaunee and Marquette County to get behind the association and support our endeavors through a simple $30 membership fee,” said Don Gladwell, President of the Association. More than twenty businesses have offered discounts and incentives on the thirtieth anniversary membership card. In addition, new or renewing members will have a chance to win prizes at Irontown’s annual meeting where more than a dozen items will be given away to members in good standing. The Annual meeting is for all current members of the Association, but Gladwell says that anyone who would like to join the Negaunee Irontown can attend the annual meeting, pay their dues for 2009 and were eligible for the drawings. Also to celebrate thirty years, the Irontown board hopes to raise more money for this year’s Pioneer Days fireworks display, as well as adding new events to that week-long celebration, which takes place July 5 through 11 this year. “We have a tradition of top-notch fireworks in Negaunee, but this year we hope to raise enough money to put our summer display over the top to celebrate our milestone,” Gladwell said. Becoming a member of Irontown is quite simple. Membership requires just a $30 annual fee. All members receive a membership card, entitling them to discounts at area businesses and a bi-annual newsletter. Members do not need to live, work or have graduated from Negaunee to become members. Most importantly, membership does not require any meeting commitments. To support the Negaunee Irontown Association and the community, print your name and address on a sheet of paper and mail that and a check for $30, made payable to the Negaunee Irontown Association to: Negaunee Irontown Association P.O. Box 128 Negaunee, MI 49866 A Note From the PresidentWelcome to the Negaunee Irontown Associations Web site. This site is intended to give you up-to-date information on our annual events--Pioneer Days and Heikki Lunta Winterfest--as well as information regarding our organization. The Negaunee Irontown Association’s mission is to preserve the heritage of Negaunee and the discovery of iron ore in the Great Lakes Region in 1844. We encourage graduates, friends and former residents to return to Negaunee to participate in a continuing relationship with the community and to encourage their support of the Negaunee Historical Society. We invite you to become a member or to continue your membership so that we may continue to bring you these annual celebrations. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank you for visiting our site and we hope you have found it to be useful and informative. --Don Gladwell, Negaunee Irontown Association president
