ROMBACK LEADS 1986 TO 2006 CHAMPIONSHIP
Consecutive home runs by MVP Keith Romback powered the Class of 1986 to a 7-3 win over the Class of 2004 in the championship game of the 11th Annual Negaunee High School alumni softball tournament at LaCombe Saturday evening. In the bottom of a 3-run first, Romback followed Ray Pleau's single with a 2-run blast and winning pitcher, Gregg Corkin, singled and scored on two errors for 1986. In the third inning, singles by Duane Plattenberg and Steve Heliin set the 'plate' for Romback's two-out, three run blast over the goal posts in left and a 6-0 lead. 2004 created a stir in the sixth as two runs scored on a dropped fly ball in left only to see 1986 tally one more in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Heliin. Angela Kangas singled in the final run of the game for 2004 in the final inning. In winning the men's MVP, Romback batted .600 going 9 for 15 including a double, triple, 2 home runs and 5 runs batted in. For the ladies, Heather Luokkala of the Class of 2005 took the MVP award batting .625 going 5 for 8 in the three games she played in. The 2006 Pioneer Princess, Samantha Richards, handed out the individual shirts for each team, the MVP shirts, and the traveling trophy to the Class of 1986 at home plate following the game. Class of 1986 First to Reach Semi-Finals The Class of 1986 became the first team to reach the semi-finals in the 11th Annual Negaunee Alumni softball tournament being held at LaCombe Field Wednesday night, while the Class of 1993 became the last team to reach the quarterfinals. After 10 years of frustration, winning only a couple of games, 1986 is getting good pitching and solid hitting throughout it's lineup for a berth in the semi-finals at 7:00 p.m. Friday night. Two seven-run innings, the first and sixth, propelled them to an easy 16-4 clubbing of the Class of 1979. Pounding out 22 hits, the winners were led by Ray Pleau, Pete Borlace and Tim Brandt with three hits each and Keith Romback with a three-run home run. Gregg Corkin picked up the win allowing all four runs in the 2nd inning. Trailing 7-2 in the 3rd, the Class of 1993 rallied to eliminate the Class of 2002 and make their first ever appearance in the quarterfinals. Scoring three runs in the 3rd,'93 took their first lead 10-7 with a four-run fifth inning and held on for the 13-9 win. Dean Leece supplied the lumber with three hits including two home runs and four RBIs, Dave Dellangelo included a home run with his three hits and Rich Karki added three hits and scored 3 times. B.J. Noskey and Ben Wilson picked up two hits each for 2002.
