NEGAUNEE—The Negaunee Irontown Association is proud to announce their schedule for the 2008 Heikki Lunta Winterfest, set for January 18 through 20, 2008. This year’s festival will feature the annual fishing derby, Blooper Ball, pasty and cudighi sales, an Eagles breakfast, bonfires, fireworks and more.

On Friday, the Negaunee Eagles Club will host their weekly fish fry from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to enjoy a fish dinner for $7.50, or a variety of other foods, including burgers, chicken, appetizers and more for various prices. Call 475-9584 for details.

The annual fishing derby begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday on Teal Lake. Participants can register at Holiday Station Stores in Negaunee and Ishpeming, Buck’s Party Store in Negaunee or Wilderness Sports in Ishpeming, beginning January 1. Pre-registration is $5 for adults and $1 for kids younger than 12; on event day, the charge is $6 for adults and $2 for children. State of Michigan rules and regulations apply and a valid Michigan fishing license is required. At the event’s 3:00 p.m. conclusion, a variety of prizes in various categories will be awarded in both adult and youth categories. Same-day registration and weigh-in will take place at Paisano’s Pizza, on the shores of Teal Lake.

For non-anglers, Blooper Ball begins at 10:00 a.m. at LaCombe Field on Baldwin Avenue in Negaunee. Teams use a large rubber ball and bats to play a baseball-style game in the snow. In its second year, this event is open to adults and families, with hopes that two divisions can be formed. A concession stand will be available at the field. The registration fee per team is $10. A trophy will be awarded to the overall winner. To register, visit the Irontown Web site or send your team name, contact person and phone number to P.O. Box 128; Negaunee, MI 49866

On Saturday, January 19, festivities continue with pick-up for the pasty sale from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Negaunee Elks. Hungry residents and visitors can order their delicious pasties ahead of time from any Irontown member or by calling the Elks at 475-4401. Cost is $3.50 each. Some proceeds from the event will benefit the Irontown Association.

The Upper Peninsula Luge Club will host an open house at Lucy Hill from noon to 5:00 p.m. Children under eighteen with supervision by a parent or legal guardian and adults can try luge for free. A concession stand will be available.

The Negaunee Eagles Club will host a cudighi sale from noon to 7:00 p.m. Cudighi is available in bulk for $2.50 a pound or ready-to-eat for $5.

At 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, bonfires will be held on the shores of Teal Lake, preceding the fireworks over the lake at 7:00 p.m.

On Sunday morning, the Eagles Breakfast Buffet will be served from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Eagles Negaunee Clubhouse. Cost is $5.50 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3.75 for children 10 and younger.

Irontown will offer Keski-Talven Juhlat (Mid-Winter Festivities), the culmination of the three-day festival. Added fun this year will be a snowshoe/cross-country skiing geocaching event, provided by the Marquette County Health Department. Snow fort building, sledding and a bonfire will be available in Old Towne Festival park during this time.
